dc.description.abstract Mahendra, Megananta Yoga. 2025. “Analysis of high salinity in the reverse osmosis plant at Mt. SC Discovery xlvi” This study examines the issue of elevated salinity levels in the reverse osmosis (RO) plant aboard the MT. SC Discovery XLVI, a critical system used to convert seawater into freshwater for daily operational and domestic use. The problem was identified during a 12-month sea practice, where the RO plant failed to produce freshwater with acceptable salinity levels. Key contributing factors included reduced high-pressure pump output, fouled membranes, and poor maintenance practices. A qualitative descriptive method was used, incorporating observation, interviews, and documentation analysis. The root causes were mapped using a Fishbone Diagram, and problem prioritization was determined using the USG (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth) method. Results indicated that mechanical degradation—particularly worn axial pump components—and operator knowledge gaps were the primary drivers of poor desalination performance. The study recommends implementing a scheduled maintenance program, including regular membrane cleaning (CIP), pressure monitoring, and enhanced crew training. These actions are essential to ensure optimal RO plant operation and consistent freshwater production aboard the vessel. en_US
