Support Diesel Generator Engine Performance on MV Ship. Dewi Ambarwati”
This research aims to evaluate and optimize the maintenance of the fuel injector valve in
the diesel generator engine onboard MV. Dewi Ambarwati. The main issues identified
during the sea practice include the uneven exhaust gas temperature between cylinders and
the malfunctioning of the fuel injector valve. Using a qualitative root cause analysis
approach, the research was conducted over a 12 month period, from August 13, 2023, at
Gresik Port to August 13, 2024, at Garongkong Port. Data collection techniques included
direct observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that the variation
in exhaust gas temperature was caused by a stuck rack in the fuel injector pump, clogged
fuel filters, and disturbances in the cooling system. Meanwhile, the fuel injector valve
malfunctioned due to nozzle wear, spring fatigue, and inadequate periodic maintenance.
Proper actions such as lubrication, cleaning, replacement of worn components, and
adherence to maintenance procedures based on the manual book and the Plan
Maintenance System (PMS) significantly improved engine performance and reduced the
risk of damage. This study recommends the implementation of scheduled maintenance
and the use of high-quality spare parts to maintain operational efficiency on board.
