Albaradey Lubis, Muhammad. 564211208. " Analysis of the Decreased Production of
Compressed Air in the Main Air Compressor to Support Smooth Maneuvering Operations
on Board MT. Griya Cirebon "
This study aims to analyze the causes of the decreased production of compressed air by
the main air compressor on board MT. Griya Cirebon, which significantly affects the
ship’s maneuvering operations. The main issue identified is the extended duration
required to fill the air bottles, which increased from the normal ±10 minutes to 15–20
minutes. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach through direct
observation, documentation study, and interviews with engine room personnel during the
sea training period. The inspection revealed component damage, including a broken
piston ring and carbon deposits on the suction and delivery valves in the high-pressure
section. Analysis was conducted using a fishbone diagram and problem prioritization
through the USG method (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth). Key contributing factors
include the lack of scheduled maintenance in accordance with the manual, the use of nonoriginal spare parts, and insufficient familiarization of watchkeeping personnel with
compressor inspection procedures. Proposed solutions include aligning the Planned
Maintenance System (PMS) with manufacturer instructions, improving crew training, and
ensuring the use of genuine spare parts. This research is expected to serve as a reference
for ship engineers in maintaining the reliability of compressed air systems to ensure
optimal performance of the main engine during maneuvering.
