Racka Agung Sustyana E.P, 2025 "Analysis of Bunker Fresh Water Quality on Scale
and Corrosion Formation in the Boiler System on Board MT Pangrango"
This study aims to analyze the impact of bunker fresh water quality on scale formation
and corrosion within the boiler system aboard MT Pangrango. The boiler system plays a
crucial role in supporting ship operations, particularly in generating steam for heating
cargo and fuel. Field observations revealed damage to components such as the feed water
pump impeller, which showed signs of corrosion and scale buildup within the stage
housing. These issues were suspected to be caused by poor-quality bunker water that
failed to meet required standards.
The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through
direct observation, interviews with ship crew, and testing of water parameters (pH,
alkalinity, chloride, and hardness). The test results indicated that the bunker water
contained parameter values exceeding the recommended limits, including low pH and
high chloride levels, both of which can accelerate corrosion and scale formation.
This research concludes that poor freshwater quality can reduce boiler efficiency,
accelerate component damage, and disrupt the heating process on ships. Therefore,
monitoring water quality, implementing reverse osmosis systems, and improving the
effectiveness of softeners are essential to maintain the quality of water entering the boiler
system and to prevent damage and maintain the performance of the boiler system. |
