ANALISIS PENERAPAN GARBAGE MANAGEMENT PLAN (MARPOL73/78 ANNEX V) UNTUK MENGURANGI PENCEMARAN LAUT DI MV. EVER OATH

Abstract

Marine pollution caused by waste disposal from ships is a serious issue that impacts the sustainability of marine ecosystems. This study aims to analysede the implementation of the Garbage Management Plan (GMP) in accordance with MARPOL 73/78 Annex V on board the MV. Ever Oath, as an effort to reduce marine pollution. The method used is the fishbone diagram approach, with data collection techniques including observation, documentation, and literature study during the sea practice period from August 2023 to August 2024. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of GMP on the MV. Ever Oath is still suboptimal. This is evident from the inefficient waste segregation at the garbage station, ineffective waste disposal scheduling, and the lack of crew understanding regarding the procedures for waste separation and handling according to MARPOL Annex V categories. The improper waste management has led to several impacts, including waste accumulation, mixing of waste categories, emergence of disease vectors, and potential violations of international regulations. This study recommends enhancing crew education and training, optimizing onboard waste management facilities, and strengthening internal monitoring and evaluation systems. With the effective implementation of GMP in compliance with international standards, it is expected that marine pollution from ship operations can be minimized, thereby helping to preserve the marine environment.
