ANALISIS IMPLEMENTASI GARBAGE MANAGEMENT PLAN PADA MT. HAFNIA CATERINA SESUAI DENGAN PERATURAN MARPOL 73/78 ANNEX V

Abstract

Marine pollution from ships is a seriousy problem that can threaten the sustainability of marine ecosystems and have an impact on the sustainability of human life. This research aims to analyze the implementation of Garbage Management Plan on MT ships. Hafnia Caterina, and evaluated the suitability of its implementation with the international regulations of MARPOL 73/78 Annex V. The method used in this research was qualitative descriptive with a direct observation approach during sea practice, interviews with ship officers, and documentation of waste management activities on board. The results of the research showed that the implementation of Garbage Management Plan on ships has not been running optimally due to the low awareness and understanding of crew members regarding waste management, limited facilities and capacity of garbage bin, and lack of familiarization and supervision from ship officers. As a result, there are still pollution happen because of disposal of any garbage to the sea that are not in accordance with procedures, such as mixing in garbage bin that plastic waste with food waste and discharging it directly into the sea. This research recommends increasing education and routine training for crew members, adding adequate waste management facilities, and enforcing strict supervision and sanctions. With a more optimal implementation of Garbage Management Plan, marine pollution by ship waste can be suppressed and the preservation of the marine environment can be maintained.
